Plans to decommission Maanshan Nuclear Power Plant Reactor 1 in July of this year and Reactor 2 in 2025 are on schedule, following the Tsai administration's 2025 Non-nuclear Homeland policy. In an interview on Friday, Economic Minister Wang Mei-hua (王美花) emphasized that the shutdown has been in the works for many years and alternative power sources, the combined output of which is more than that of the decommissioned unit, will take over electricity production.

In response to recent unit failures caused by the April earthquake in Hualien, Wang said that Taiwan’s efficiency in rerouting and repairs is one of the most impressive in the world. She added that the Economic Ministry and Taiwan Power Company will continue to educate the public about the capabilities of the country’s power system.

Wang pointed out that with the gradual retirement of nuclear power and coal-fired units and increased energy demands from Taiwanese businesses such as the semiconductor industry, the government has been continuously reviewing electricity production capacity and adding new power sources.
