On Friday, the Central Weather Administration (CWA) released a preview for its first educational short film about climate change in an effort to raise public attention and motivation to be proactive about global warming. The 70-minute program, entitled “Cool It Now!”, was announced alongside a special exhibition on marine meteorology and wind power generation that can be accessed via mobile device.

“Cool It Now!” will be shown at an open house event hosted by the CWA for three consecutive days starting Saturday. It features the CWA’s former director Cheng Ming-dean (鄭明典) alongside several climate change experts discussing the challenges of climate change, the impact this phenomenon will have on Taiwan, and adaptation and mitigation strategies.

The short film was shot in a documentary style and the crew utilized green filming techniques and practices, such as all electronic scripts and notices, avoidance of disposable props and costumes, reusable tableware, and public transport.

Researcher and CEO of Academia Sinica's Research Center for Environmental Changes Hsu Huang-Hsiung (許晃雄) commented further on the issue of climate change. When asked what the worst-case scenario looks like for Taiwan in a world that is 4-5 degrees warmer, Hsu said spring drought conditions will worsen and summer could become as long as 210 days, hugely impacting ecology and agriculture.
