KMT to send letter to WHO director on “One China policy”
WHO Director-General Margaret Chan

The KMT has announced that it is sending a letter to the World Health Organization Director-General Margaret Chan stating its view on the “One China policy”.

The “One China principle” has a topic of heated discussion in the Legislature since the arrival of an invitation to the World Health Assembly (WHA). The invitation ended speculation that China was hoping to thwart Taiwan’s participation after the Taiwanese electorate earlier this year voted in a president who is seen as wary of China.

But while Taiwan has been cleared to attend once again as an observer, the invitation contains language that angered some lawmakers. This includes references to the 1971 UN resolution that paved the way for the UN’s “China” seat to be taken from Taipei and given to Beijing. Lawmakers representing the pro-independence New Power Party tried unsuccessfully lobbied for the Legislature to issue a unified protest.

At a press conference Friday, ranking KMT party members said they will write to the WHO director-general to voice their continued support for the “One China” policy. The party members said that they continue to interpret “One China” to mean the Republic of China, Taiwan’s official name.
