The Mainland Affairs Council says Taiwan’s future relations with Macau do not look optimistic. The top China policy-making body made the remarks in a statement.
The statement came after a top Taiwanese official stationed in Macau returned to Taiwan Sunday after being denied a visa extension. He was denied the extension because he refused to sign a pledge to support Beijing’s “one China” policy.
There are now four Taiwanese officials left at the Office of Macau Affairs to offer services to Taiwanese citizens.
The MAC said the government has a contingency plan. It does not rule out the possibility of hiring local Macau residents to handle affairs in the future, a model used by the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office (TECO) in Hong Kong
Seven officials stationed in Hong Kong left this month and four left last year for the same reason. There is only one Taiwanese official left in Hong Kong. His visa is set to expire at the end of July.
