VIDEO: Han Kuang artillery exercises simulate coastal invasion
On Day Four of the Han Kuang military exercises, Taiwan’s strongest artillery was lined up and ready to simulate its defense strategy.

A squadron of Taiwan's howitzers took aim into the sea, as if there were enemy ships attempting to land and invade Pingtung. Howitzers are a crucial part of the Han Kuang combat simulations. They are similar to cannons, but are capable of throwing exploding shells in an arcing trajectory.

The self-propelled M110A2 and M109A2, along with the M114 howitzer are all American-made artillery pieces. In total, 150 units of heavy artillery were used in this combat exercise.

Besides here in Pingtung, Hsinchu, Taichung, and Hualien are also conducting similar counter-attack exercises on the coast.

Defense exercises are essential for the air force as well. On Wednesday, Taiwan detected nine Chinese military jets in its air defense identification zone. The air force warned China that the jets should retreat immediately.

Although these are only simulations, the goal of the annual Han Kuang exercises is to make sure that all branches of the military are prepared if a real threat presents itself.
