Japan’s Aso Kumamoto Airport wants to establish direct flights with Taipei. That’s according to a local Japanese newspaper.
The world’s largest contract chip maker Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) currently has plans to establish a plant in Kumamoto. Authorities anticipate increased travel and logistics between Taiwan and the Japanese prefecture.
Aso Kumamoto Airport only services routes to and from Kaohsiung City in southern Taiwan. However, those flights have been suspended due to COVID-19.
To make travel between Kumamoto and TSMC’s headquarters in northern Taiwan more convenient, Kumamoto airport authorities want to establish direct passenger and cargo flights to and from Taipei.
According to reports, Kumamoto authorities reached out to Taiwan’s national carrier China Airlines upon learning of TSMC’s plan to establish a plant in their prefecture. Japanese airport officials are also in contact with other Taiwanese airlines.
