Taiwan and more than 50 other countries are calling on the world to prop up Ukraine’s war-ravaged economy. Monday’s joint statement says the Russian invasion risks pushing “millions” around the world into food insecurity.

Officials from the United States, Japan, Germany and Taiwan, among others, backed the move.

The show of support for Ukraine came after trade representatives met in Geneva for talks at the World Trade Organization (WTO).

In the statement, the officials express their “full support for, and solidarity with, the people of Ukraine.” They say the war is having a “devastating” impact on Ukraine’s economy and disrupting trade in several of Ukraine’s key exports. Those include agricultural and food products, fertilizers, sunflower oil and critical minerals.

The statement also expresses concern at reports of grain being plundered from Ukraine. Kyiv says Russia has stolen up to 500,000 tons of wheat worth US$100 million since the war began.

Officials end by saying they will support Ukrainian farmers, offer humanitarian aid and look for ways to help rebuild the country.
