Taiwanese and Japanese companies demonstrated a new drone defense system in Taoyuan on Wednesday aimed at detecting and disrupting enemy drone signals. The system, developed by Jingwei Aerospace Technology and Fortunio Japan, uses a combination of passive detection and AI-based technologies.

The passive detection system uses radio waves to interfere with the transmission signals used by drones. When a drone is unable to receive signals, it will either spin in place or return to its home base. The system also utilizes AI to identify and track drones automatically.

Jingwei Aerospace Technology Chairman Luo Zhengfang (羅正方) says that the system is designed to protect critical infrastructure from drone attacks. He noted that China has been using drones to harass military bases in Taiwan’s outlying islands. He adds that evidence from the war in Ukraine shows that drones are often used to target civilian facilities such as power plants, hospitals, bridges, and train stations.

Director at Jingwei Aerospace Technology Li Chung-chih (李重志), says that the system is also being developed for use by the Taiwanese military. He adds however that the focus is on civilian defense, as the military is already busy with other tasks. He says the two companies plan to establish a joint venture in Taiwan to produce the system.
