National Security Bureau and Defense Ministry are closely monitoring the Taiwan Strait: security bureau director-general

A shift in the language used by China has raised concerns about a changing approach towards Taiwan. China’s Premier Li Qiang (李強) dropped the term “peaceful” when he reiterated China’s firm position on Taiwan’s reunification during his delivery of a government work report at the opening session of China’s National People’s Congress on March 5.

Given the escalating tensions indicated by the recent Kinmen speedboat incident and increase in military aircraft and naval ships operating around Taiwan, the National Security Bureau (NSB) was asked to give its input on the situation. NSB Director-General Tsai Ming-yen (蔡明彥) stated at the legislature on Monday that China’s stance towards Taiwan has not changed. China still opposes Taiwan independence, promotes reunification, and rejects any external interference on matters relating to the island nation.

As to China’s intention towards Taiwan and its status within the Taiwan Strait, Tsai reassures the public that both the NSB and the Defense Ministry are closely monitoring the situation. Both agencies have engaged in discussions with international allies and have not received any intelligence reports indicating a further rise in tensions. He adds that should there be any changes, the response would follow plans to maintain stability in the Taiwan Strait.
