President Tsai Ing-wen (蔡英文) attended the inauguration ceremony of Powerchip Semiconductor Manufacturing Corporation’s (PSMC) new factory in Miaoli on Thursday morning. There, President Tsai said the new factory demonstrates both Taiwan’s industrial strength and the resilience of Taiwan’s semiconductor industry.

In her speech, President Tsai called the semiconductor industry Taiwan’s past, present, and future. She pointed out the efforts the government has made over the last eight years to promote smart innovation to ensure Taiwan’s leading position in the global technology ecosystem. She emphasized that the government will continue working with the private sector to maintain Taiwan’s dominant position in the future.

The inauguration ceremony was attended by President Tsai Ing-wen, heads of relevant ministries, the American Institute in Taiwan, and representatives from India, Japan, and France.

PSMC started the construction of the new Tongluo Fabrication Plant in March of 2021. It is expected to build a 12-inch wafer production line, with a monthly production capacity of 50,000 wafers. The current 12-inch wafer fab project has cost more than NT$80 billion (over US$2.4 million).

PSMC Chairman Frank Huang (黃崇仁) pointed out that the world has become increasingly aware of the global supply chain due to current geopolitical conflicts. With the construction of the new factory, it is the goal that PSMC will be able to better meet the demands of large customers, contributing to a more robust and resilient supply chain.
