Premier calls for English lessons from kindergarten
Premier William Lai
Premier William Lai is calling for an end to a ban on teaching English in Taiwan’s kindergartens. That’s amid his efforts to turn Taiwan into a bilingual country.

Current legislation bans both English-language education and the hiring of foreign teachers at kindergartens.

Lai suggested the possibility of scrapping the ban on kindergarten English last week at a meeting with the education ministry. That’s after coming to an understanding that learning a language at the earliest possible age bears the best results.

Lai has assigned the National Development Council to be in charge of bilingual education policy. The council’s minister Chen Mei-ling says the aim of the policy is to ensure that each citizen can understand, speak, read, and write both Chinese and English. Chen said the council will come up with more concrete proposals about the issue by the end of the year.
